We
take pride in making your child’s dental experience as pleasant and
comfortable as possible. We will thoroughly present treatment
options, explain our procedures and educate your child in the
maintenance of his/her dental health. Our staff members chose to
work in this office because they like working with children. We can
demonstrate many dental procedures on your child’s fingers before
they are performed on their teeth. It is our goal to have you and
your child feel secure in the treatment of your child’s dental
needs.
We use the
latest techniques to assure your child is comfortable during each
procedure.
Nitrous Oxide / Oxygen Sedation: Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
is a blend of two gasses that when inhaled through a scented mask
(bubblegum, strawberry, orange or vanilla); it is absorbed by the
body and can have a calming and relaxing effect. If your child is
worried by sights, sounds or sensations of dental treatment, he/she
may respond better with the use of
nitrous sedation. Nitrous oxide
is very safe. It is perhaps the safest sedative in dentistry and is
non-addictive. It is mild, easily taken, and then quickly eliminated
by the body. Your child remains fully conscious and keeps all
natural reflexes, when breathing a combination of nitrous oxide and
oxygen. Your child will wear a mask for the duration of the
treatment. Once finished, he/she will breathe 100% oxygen for a few
minutes before discharge. Nitrous oxide sedation often offers
effective pain control without the use of needles for small
procedures. Nitrous oxide sedation in conjunction with a local
anesthesia provides comfort for larger procedure s and those
procedures in permanent teeth.
We
know that all the patients are not alike. Nitrous oxide is not
effective for some children. The best candidates are children with
minor-moderate dental needs and mild degree of anxiety.

You
may accompany your child their in-office treatment at all times.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation: Extremely frightened, uncooperative
children with mild to moderate
dental needs can be treated with
intravenous (IV) sedation in our office. The sedative is
administered and monitored by a pediatric anesthesiologist. The
anesthesiologist will give medications to your child through a
venous access which will put your child into a deep sleep so that we
can do the required dental treatment. With this kind of sedative
it is
almost always possible to complete the treatment in one visit and
your child will remember very little of the appointment.
By
providing IV sedation in our office rather than in the hospital, we
can reduce the parent’s expense and make the experience convenient
and pleasant in a familiar environment.
IV
anesthesia requires strict eating and drinking guidelines, so we
recommend quiet activities for your child for the rest of the day.

Dr. Viola Devany
We are very fortunate and proud to work with
Dr. Viola Devany. Dr.
Devany’s specialized expertise and calm demeanor make her a great
asset to our practice.
Thanks to her services we can now provide comprehensive restorative
and surgical care to those anxious and/or young and cognitively
immature patients that can not cooperate in the regular dental
setting, in the comfort of our office!
Dr. Devany received her bachelor’s degree in
Biology and Chemistry from
Kent
State
University
in 1977. She then went
to Ohio State University-School of Medicine where she completed her
doctorate in 1980. Dr.
Devany is dual trained in Pediatrics and Anesthesiology.
She completed her residency in Pediatrics at the Dallas
Children’s Hospital in 1984.
She then went to the University of North Carolina
in Chapel Hill
where she trained as a resident in Anesthesiology and completed her
degree in 1986. Her passion for both specialties encouraged her to
complete a post graduate fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesia at Emory University
in 1987. Dr. Viola
Devany specializes in In-Office Pediatric Intravenous Sedation and
Anesthesia.
Dr. Devany lives in
Tipp City, Ohio
with her husband Glen.
She has three sons; Sam, Greg and Henry, and three cats.

General Anesthesia:
General anesthesia is a management
technique that uses medications to cause the child to become
unconscious and asleep while receiving dental care. Although there
is some risk associated with general anesthesia, it is safe when
administered by an appropriately trained individual in an
appropriately equipped facility. Many precautions are taken to
provide safety for the child during general anesthesia care.
Patients are monitored closely during the general anesthesia
procedure by personnel who are trained to manage complications.
Children with severe anxiety and/or with moderate to extensive
dental needs are candidates for general anesthesia. These children
may be young or have compromised health or special needs. They
usually require extensive dental treatment and their anxiety cannot
be controlled with conscious sedation techniques. These patients are
treated at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center by Dr.
Betsy or Dr. Callen. The general anesthetic is administered and
monitored by a pediatric anesthesiologist.

PATIENT PROTECTION
In the last few years,
patient protection has become and issue of public concern. With the
discovery of the AIDS (HIV) virus and the medical implications of
Hepatitis-B, it has become necessary for health care facilities to
consistently apply “state of the art” sterilization and disinfection
techniques to provide patients with maximum protection.
In our office, your child’s safety is our highest priority.
Throughout the day, we continuously and thoroughly sterilize our
equipment for your child’s protection. Our protocol for
sterilization includes the following:
Before and after each patient appointment, all treatment surfaces
(e.g. countertops, chair surfaces, lights, x-ray machines and trays)
are disinfected with the most effective and safest product
available.
To ensure your safety, we follow standard sterilization procedures
with all instruments and handpieces. They are brought into the
sterilization room and placed in an ultrasonic cleaner to remove
even microscopic debris. The instruments and handpieces are then
rinsed thoroughly before being sterilized in a chemiclave, thereby
destroying all bacteria and all viruses.
Our chemiclaves are monitored regularly to ensure their effectiveness
and safety.
Staff members use masks, safety glasses and new gloves for each
patient.
All staff members are updated annually in proper patient protection
procedures and have been vaccinated against the Hepatitis-B virus.
We will be happy to answer any questions regarding patient
protection and give you a personal tour of our sterilization
facility.
Our office is HIPPA (Health Information Portability and Privacy
Act) compliant and will do everything in its power to protect
your healthcare information. HIPPA forms must be completed annually
for each patient by the parent.
